Close-range Model of a Fossilized Rock

Frances Wiig while as a student at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) created a 3D model of a small (~8 x 12cm) fossilized rock.

To establish a local coordinate system, the rock was placed upon a sheet of grid paper and several of the grid line intersections were used as control points.

Multiple photographs were then taken from various angles circling the rock. These images were then used to digitize a series of polygons to map out the minute details of the fossils upon the rock's surface.
