Tidal Flow Modelling of Wolfville Harbour

The tides of the Bay of Fundy (between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada) are the largest in the world, with tidal ranges on the order of 10-15 metres. Kevin Brown, while as a student at the Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS), used ObliqueMapper to observe the water levels at a small harbour in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Photographs of a portion of the harbour were taken every 5 minutes during the incoming tide. Water levels were digitized from each photograph and compared to reference data collected by a Leica total station.

As well as creating other products such as 3D contours and an Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the area; Brown was also able to determine the average flow rate of water into the harbour (~22 cubic metres / minute).
